#41 Behind That Facade

What we think is probably true about a person we don't know well, or maybe even at all, might be a picture of a person much different than they really are. When we judge a person by their appearance maybe what we see is what we get, and maybe it's not.

Not everybody who appears to have a frown on their face is unhappy, in a bad mood, or unfriendly. It's just the kind of face they have and just one kind word from you might be enough for their face to completely light up.

That person over their that looks like a real goofball (as in goofy person or dum-dum) might actually be a very talented individual. And some of the most scary looking people on the planet can be kind-hearted and considerate.

Some have what others call an “abrasive personality.” Instead of allowing that to prevent you from investing time in us I want you to consider that it might be worth it to get to know us better. Old grouches can be some interesting folks to have as friends.

The Good Lord of the Bible has warned us about a “million” times to not make too much of a person's outward appearance, but we go ahead and do it anyway.

[1 Samuel 16:7] But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the Lord does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the Lord sees the heart.” BSB

You don't have to be a genius to figure out that the coolest dudes around don't always make a good leader. It's amazing to me how some of the most talented people are not the most productive ones.

What some of us tend to forget is what doesn't come off as very impressive in others can be how they are most like us.

What's really a good deal for all of us: God is not limited who he can work through. Sometimes he does and amazing work through those who are super popular and super talented. And a lot of the time God chooses to work through "weaker" vessels.

The Bible is full of stories God accomplishing his purposes through those who were old, poor, diseased, an orphan, wore strange fashions, spent time in prison, was still just a kid, had been living in sin, were inexperienced, uneducated, and through a whole lot more ordinary people.

God's got room for you on Jesus' team and he has a plan for your life is really good news. And don't forget, some of the best friends you'll ever have can be those people who were a little hard to get to know.
